Air-to-air heat pump
Air-to-air heat pump: the smart and affordable alternative to traditional heat pumps
More and more households want to use less gas or switch completely to electric heating. They often look at large, expensive installations such as air-to-water heat pumps. But there is an alternative that is quicker to install, much cheaper and surprisingly efficient: the air-to-air heat pump. In effect, it is a modern air conditioner that can both cool and heat.
At Aircobrabant BV we see this solution growing enormously in popularity among people who want to make their home more sustainable without major renovation or a high investment.
What is an air-to-air heat pump?
An air-to-air heat pump uses outside air as its energy source. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the air and the indoor unit blows this heat directly into the room. In summer the same system works in reverse and cools the home.
Because of this direct heating method, no connection to radiators or underfloor heating is needed. That makes the installation simple and affordable, yet very efficient.
Why choose this system as an alternative to traditional heat pumps?
- Lower costs than an air-to-water heat pump
A traditional heat pump often requires an investment of 10,000 to 20,000 euros and requires changes to existing installations.
An air-to-air heat pump can be installed from about €1600 to €3000 per room. This makes it an accessible way for many households to start heating energy-efficiently. - Very energy-efficient, ideal for reducing your gas bill
Thanks to the high COP value (efficiency of 4 to 5.5), an air-to-air heat pump heats much more efficiently than a gas central heating boiler. Many users therefore burn 50 to 80 percent less gas. - Comfortable heat straight away
A major advantage over traditional heating is that the system delivers heat within minutes. This makes it ideal for living spaces, bedrooms, offices and practice rooms. - No renovation needed
No underfloor heating or new radiators are needed. You only need an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. This makes the system interesting for both existing homes and new builds. - Perfect for hybrid heating
Many people use their air-to-air heat pump as primary heating and let the central heating boiler only step in at extremely cold moments. This is often the most practical and affordable route to low-gas or even gas-free living.
Can an air-to-air heat pump replace the central heating boiler?
For well-insulated homes this is certainly possible. In less well-insulated homes the system works excellently in hybrid form. You then heat entirely electrically for most of the year, while the central heating boiler remains available in the background for peak moments.
The system mainly heats the rooms where you place the indoor units. For other rooms you can have extra units installed or opt for hybrid support via the central heating.
Please note: hot water is not supplied by the air-to-air heat pump.
What do you save with an air-to-air heat pump?
The exact benefit differs per home, but on average our customers see:
- 30 to 80 percent less gas consumption
- Lower monthly costs thanks to more efficient energy use
- Faster comfort because the room reaches temperature sooner
Do you have solar panels? Then heating with an air-to-air heat pump can become almost free.
